Google acquires DoubleClick for $3.1 Billion
In an apparent bidding war with Microsoft, Google have acquired the advertiser DoubleClick (official press release here) for $3.1 Billion cash (almost twice how much they paid for YouTube). As well as the all important customer base, this will provide Google with 5 more patents to their 62 patent collection.
The bidding with Microsoft obviously went quite high but at the end of the day, Google’s core business is advertising, so they are always going to be willing to pay more to protect themselves (if there is cash in the piggy).
Bad news for Microsoft, DoubleClick was one of the biggest opportunities for them to compete with Google in the online advertising space. The only big fish left is Yahoo, and that is likely to be a price Microsoft cannot pay.
Where can you go today, Microsoft?
